New Black Keys, Sam Fender Music Trending Up

These artists as Well As Others are bolstering our alternative playlist.

Welcome back to your latest update on what music we have joining our rotation this week on 89.1!

We are always looking for Today's Hit Alternative (hence the tagline) and through two months, 2025 has not disappointed.

Whether it has been new music or newly discovered music, the likes of Lola Young, Green Day, blink-182, Linkin Park, and of course several others have either cemented their status in 2025 or carried over strongly from 2024.

Let's get to the music headed your way this week on The Bash.

New (To You) Music

I'm Full - Wallows

From the band's debut album Nothing Happens, "I'm Full" is the tenth song on the 38 minute tracklist.

It features Dylan Minnette as the lead vocalist and was originally released under a previous name of the group, The Narwhals. The song details the battle of breaking bad habits and resorting to substances to avoid confronting insecurity and embracing inner change to achieve self-improvement, per the band's interview with Clash Music.

Minnette goes on to say while he has never struggled with the aforementioned addictions, the message still rings true for many.

The track comes in at 3:42, the fifth longest on the album, and is one of my newfound personal favorites from the band's discography.

I KNow You - Faye Webster

If you aren't familiar with Faye Webster, this song is a good place to start. "I Know You" is Webster's second-most streamed song in her discography, just behind "Kingston." It comes from her second album, self-titled Faye Webster.

The song details a message of closure in a fading relationship, with lyrics "When we're old and have to leave the Earth, I'll still remember all I've learned from you." I am currently in the process of going through her entire discography, but so far it is no surprise why the song is so popular.

Webster has been making music since she was 16, self-releasing her debut album Run and Tell at the same age in 2013. Webster has since created a loyal following, reaching 8.3 million monthly listeners on Spotify.

That's it for the established music. Let's switch gears to some recent releases headed to our airwaves.

New Music

The Night Before - The Black Keys

Starting with The Black Keys' newest release "The Night Before" is a single likely attached to a forthcoming album.

There's been no confirmation from what I can tell of the name, but they are set to begin a US and World Tour titled No Rain No Flowers and there have been several promotional posts with a logo attached to that same name. The track feels as if it could have been on their 2022 album Dropout Boogie. I'm excited nonetheless for what's to come from one of the bands that kickstarted my love for this genre.

Idiot Box - Sharon Van Etten

Sharon Van Etten is an artist I have only discovered in recent years, but her music has become a staple of my library. Her latest album Sharon Van Etten and The Attachment Theory is a change of direction for the band and is better left described in her own words:

Sometimes it's exciting, sometimes it's scary, sometimes you feel stuck...If I can just keep a sense of openness while knowing that my feelings change every day, that is all I can do right now. - Sharon Van Etten, per the band's Spotify account.

It seems as though Van Etten was hesitant to fully collaborate with her band when it came to songwriting, but the resulting sound was a nice change of pace. "Idiot Box" represents the echo chamber that a large portion of society finds themselves in online. The track encourages individual thought and the sharing of ideas and discourages herd mentality, making it truly a song of the times.

Shaking Shoulder - The Vices

Another group I have only come across in the last few years, but one that is so deserving of a spotlight is The Vices. Their latest discography addition Before It Might Be Gone has brought us an album that is reminiscent of the band Death Cab For Cutie and Nothing But Thieves, a band they actually supported throughout a European tour. The album possesses tracks such as "How Does It Feel" and "Shaking Shoulder" the song in question.

Admittedly, the song has been out for less than a week and lyrics aren't yet available. From multiple listens, my best guess is that the track details a relationship that ended not so amicably and the vocalist is slowly and aggressively coming to terms with that fact.

The band actually released the above album music video, in which this song's portion of the video shows a fistfight between two men until a third party enters and knocks the vocalist unconscious. Perhaps it is a visual metaphor for a third party entering a relationship, catching one of the two partners off guard once discovered? See for yourself.

Regardless, the song is one that is dangerously enjoyable to blare through your car speakers, so you've been warned.

Wild Long Lie - Sam Fender

It has been three years since Fender's release of second studio album Seventeen Going Under, preceded by Hypersonic Missiles. Now, Sam Fender is back with People Watching, an album set for release on the 21st of February. So far, tracks "People Watching", "Arm's Length", and "Wild Long Lie" have been released as singles. Another song "Me And the Dog" was dropped alongside "Wild Long Lie" but isn't featured on the album's full tracklist.

"Wild Long Lie" notes the time of year in which Fender states "The past comes home" referencing when friends and family come back to their hometowns for the holidays. He later states "Everyone I've ever known wants it large" meaning a crazy night of drinking and partying in the UK.

The overarching theme is Fender wanting to get out of the situation he finds himself in every year hence the bridge "Think I need to leave this town, before I go down."

It's an instant classic from Sam Fender who has been a favorite of mine since he broke out in 2019.
